"Vernacular Spectacular" Republic Hotel, Nth Hobart 2000.

This show was with Mr Craig Ball and Ms Leanne Barnes.
This piece of mine was an installation in the old dart board featuring on the bottom shelf, screen printed ceramic decals fired onto commercial dinner plates. The top shelf the plates are hand made by me and the decals are used in a cut and paste mentality. The motif revolves around the Republic Debate that was happening at the time. Johnnie H had hijacked the issue by adopting a model that would be never accepted by the Australian people. Thus ensuring that the referendum was a complete farce. There is the new coat of arms with geckos, galahs and Webber BBQ (we ceremoniously consumed the emu and kangaroo of the old coat of arms as refreshments on opening night). The second plate features an image not unlike Mr Howard himself with a flock of galahs flying around his head (for those non Australians a galah is a bird, a metaphor for a mug, a stupid person, an idiot). Johnny for president looks at the high opinion the man has of himself, something not shared by Aussies who still look for the old value of a 'fair go'.
